This topic is a hard one for many people to discuss. Obviously, in recent years we have seen such a change in society and in the things that we will accept, mostly in terms of this “sexual revolution” that is going on. Surrogacy and IVF are not only morally evil in the eyes of the Catholic Church, but should be for everyone regardless of religion and here are my reasons why.
My first reason is that this whole concept views babies as something that can just be purchased, created, manufactured, and most importantly, as something everyone is entitled to. As you see so much more sexuality immorality coming into the limelight, everyone thinks that they just deserve to have whatever family they want. No one in this world is entitled to a child or to have multiple children or even the “dream family” that they want. Whenever we start to view children as something we can just buy and have and change to fit whatever we want, is when we lose sight of the dignity of human lives.
Surrogacy expands on that by just telling women that they are just a body for rent and that it’s “not a big deal” and “just a favor” for someone else. No one should have the right to rent out a woman’s womb and then take a baby that has been inside of her for 9 months, listening to her heartbeat, and throw the mother out the window. Surrogacy inherently ignores the biological component that is the relationship between mother and baby. Babies need their mother for comfort and to settle into a new life outside the womb. It would be terrifying and traumatic for a child to just lose all of that for the convenience of someone else who feels entitled to that baby. This does not just refer to same sex couples, but couples who can’t conceive naturally on their own, too.
Yes, during surrogacy consent is required and both parties agree to it. However, there is no denying the amount of issues that stem from surrogacy. Not to mention, the means that the baby is conceived is just not how a baby was meant to come into this world. There are so many things in this world that are just natural law, but to completely throw them out of the window so we can have what we want is where society sees it’s downfall.
IVF can be very much the same. Couples who participate in IVF often view their child as just another purchase their making instead of seeing the inherent dignity of this child. No one “deserves” to have a baby in this life, nor is anyone entitled to it just because they want it. Some things we just can’t have in life and should accept, especially when other means of creating a family exist! During IVF, the egg and sperm are joined outside of the natural means (AKA sex). Often, doctors will take out and inseminate multiple eggs. But not everyone wants to take the chance of having twins and so often times, these embryos stay frozen in time for years or just simply thrown in the trash like garbage.
IVF takes the inherent dignity out of the human life. If the embryo is not “perfect” or has a “defect” then it is often discarded. The same can be said for couples that are trying to pick and choose the sex of their baby. In America, we have talked for years about how terrible it was that China would kill baby girls that were born by inhumane means after they were born, yet here we are, encouraging it ourselves because we can now. No one bats an eye. In some countries, babies with Down syndrome are aborted, sometimes by force in order to prevent a population with mental disabilities.
In my lifetime, killing a baby because of sex, a deformity, a disability, any sort of difference would be called genocide. We would think that it is an archaic practice of Nazis to kill anyone who doesn’t have blonde hair and blue eyes. In the most free country in America, we simply view children as goods to be purchased and obtained however we feel, and discarded just as easy.
IVF and Surrogacy are evil practices that are so immoral and evil that everyone should oppose it. All people with any sort of morality should be fighting with their state legislatures to make it illegal. Women are not objects that can be bought and rented and babies are not just something you can buy like milk at walmart. These are real humans and their decisions have real life consequences. In the future, I hope to see a world in which IVF and surrogacy are illegal.
